Exodus 20:8-11
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant, or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”

Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Hebrews 4:9-11
“There remains then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.”

In keeping the Sabbath, we set aside specific time to respond to the wonder and beauty of One who is present in all time, to acknowledge and bless our living Source. Every Sunday is a ‘little Easter,’ so Christians worship is essentially a celebration of new life in Christ. The Lord’s day is understood to be an opportunity to rest from ordinary labor and activity. Indeed we are commanded to rest on the Sabbath. All the divine commands are life giving. How difficult it is for people in our achievement and production obsessed culture to rest. Keeping the Sabbath means trusting God to be God, recognizing that we are not indispensable. When we refuse to take a single day a week for genuine refreshment and rest, we try to out do ourselves and God. The joy and peace of worship com from entrusting ourselves to the divine provision, and releasing ourselves from the illusion that labor is the chief source of our life. Even if that labor is for the church or felt to be an expression of God’s will. Each of us need ‘mini Sabbaths’ in the course of a given day, as well as the extended Sabbaths for deeper ‘re-creation.’ But the weekly day set apart to keep Sabbath with our faith community remains the foundation and model for other kinds of Sabbath rest.

“O God of the Sabbath, I work too much. Work is good and necessary and I thank you for it, but I need to play more. I need to rest and relax, to walk and run, see friends and enjoy myself. Remind me God, to take time off and help me not to feel guilty when I do.”
